Biography[]

Johnny "Altec" Ru was born on May 8, 1997 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Ru began playing video games at the age of 8, starting with Runescape, Maplestory, and other MMORPG games. League of Legends was his first MOBA game.

Altec's first competitive team was vVv Gaming, which he joined in April 2012 and then left in August. In January 2013, Altec became the AD carry for Curse Academy, where he stayed until July of the same year, and in October 2013 he was announced as a substitute for Team SoloMid.[26] Though he never played as a starter for the team, the position helped grow his presence in the scene, and he became known as one of the stronger up-and-coming players.

2014 Season[]

In December 2013, Altec joined The Walking Zed, replacing former AD carry bobbyhankhill. Altec stayed with the team through their acquisition by Cloud9, but when they failed to qualify for the LCS summer split, the team disbanded in May. Later that month, he joined Evil Geniuses.NA as their starting AD carry, replacing yellowpete starting in the second game of the summer split.

2015 Season[]

Prior to the start of the Spring Split, Evil Geniuses rebranded itself as Winterfox. Altec played with them for the entire split; however, he switched to support for week 7, while their coach Paragon started as their mid laner. The team finished in eighth place with a 7-11 record, forced into relegations. Given the choice between playing against Team Dragon Knights and Team Fusion, Winterfox chose the former, despite their higher placement in the Challenger playoffs. Due to starting mid laner Kyle leaving the team prior to the tournament, TDK started Alex Ich in mid lane, and Winterfox lost the series 1-3 and sending them to the Challenger series. Altec left the team and joined Gravity, replacing Cop to rejoin the LCS for the summer split.[27] In the split's regular season, Gravity finished each week in at worst fourth position, even holding sole possession of first place for weeks 7 and 8; however, they lost both of their games in the final week and ended the season in fourth, after a tiebreaker loss to Team Impulse. In the playoff quarterfinals, Gravity lost to Team SoloMid, leaving them with a year-long total of 30 Championship Points, and qualifying for the regional finals in fifth place. They lost immediately in the gauntlet, reverse swept by first-round opponent Cloud9, who went on to qualify to Worlds.

2016 Season[]

Altec left Gravity and joined a new North American team, NRG Esports, who purchased Team Coast's NA LCS seed. NRG started the LCS strong, tied for either first or second place through the first four weeks, but after the fifth week they fell down to fifth place and remained there for the rest of the season. They were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

Altec joined the newly formed Cloud9 Challenger for the summer season, along with former Cloud9 players Balls, Hai, and LemonNation. The team, which had acquired Enemy's NACS Qualifiers slot, easily qualified for the NACS 2016 Summer and then dominated the circuit, losing only two games throughout the season. In the playoffs, they swept Dream Team, then beat Team Liquid Academy in the finals to secure the best possible seed heading into the promotion tournament. There, they swept 9th place LCS team NRG Esports to qualify for the 2017 NA LCS.

2017 Season[]

Due to rules preventing one organization from owning multiple LCS teams, Cloud9 Challenger was bought and rebranded to FlyQuest. Altec joined the new team, along with Moon and his C9C teammates Hai, Balls, and LemonNation. FlyQuest started the spring split with a surprisingly strong 6-2 record but went 1-7 over the next four weeks. However, a 2-0 final week let them squeak into the playoffs as the fifth seed.

In the quarterfinals, FlyQuest faced off against fourth seed Counter Logic Gaming, who were favored due to FlyQuest's weak late-season performance. After going to 0-2 in the series, FlyQuest roared back to win the next two games and eventually reverse sweep CLG off the back of some questionable aggressive calls in game seven. Unfortunately, the Cinderella story ended there, as they were quickly swept by eventual champions TSM in the semifinals, and fell to Phoenix1 in the third-place match despite taking a 2-1 series lead.

FlyQuest acquired WildTurtle before the summer season and Altec was moved to substitute. In June, he joined Dignitas, who was slumping after a hot start. The acquisition of Altec didn't immediately turn the team around, but once he was paired up with Adrian, the team went on a late-season 6-2 run to finish in fifth place with an 11-7 record.

In the playoffs, they were matched up against Cloud9, who were heavily favored due to their second-place finish in spring. Dignitas won the first two games, but lost the third and were on the brink of losing the fourth until a clutch TaliyahSquareTaliyah ultimate by Keane bought Dignitas time to come back and eventually take the series. After dropping a 3-1 semifinals set to eventual champions TSM, Dignitas moved to the third-place match, this time as favorites against CLG. However, CLG made short work of Dignitas in a 3-0 sweep. Due to making the playoffs in both splits, Dignitas still had the third seed in the Regional Finals and a chance to make Worlds, but seeming defeated, the team dropped 3-0 to seventh place FlyQuest, ending their season.

2018 Season[]

In December of 2017, Altec left Dignitas after they were not accepted in the NA LCS franchising and joined Echo Fox along with his Dignitas teammate Adrian. Echo Fox started the spring split looking like one of the best teams in the league but declined as the season went on. With academy midlaner Damonte and academy support PapaChau playing for the final week of the split, Echo Fox lost to 100 Thieves in the final game of the season to fall into a tie with them for first, then lost to them again the tiebreaker match to fall into second place.

Due to their regular-season finish, Echo Fox had a bye into the playoff semifinals, where they faced off against Team Liquid. Despite Echo Fox having the superior seeding, Liquid's veteran lineup was favored and they summarily beat Echo Fox 3-1. This sent the team to the third-place match against Clutch Gaming, and Echo Fox regained some dignity by quickly sweeping the lower-seeded team.

Echo Fox didn't announce any roster changes going into the summer season, but Adrian was replaced by academy support Feng after Week 1 and mid laner Fenix was replaced by Damonte after Week 3. In July, Altec, Adrian, and Fenix were all released by Echo Fox. These moves, which happened just before the roster lock deadline, were controversial, and eventually led to a new rule prohibiting such last-second changes. Altec did not join another competitive team for the rest of 2018.

2020 Season[]

After not playing competitively in 2019, Altec was a surprise pickup by the newly reformed Immortals for 2020. Immortals started the spring split looking shaky, but managed to pick up multiple wins anyway, ending Weeks 3 and 4 tied for second place behind the dominant Cloud9. They declined after that, somewhat expectedly, and with the team sitting at 5-5 at the end of Week 5, Altec was sent to Immortals Academy and replaced by fellow veteran Apollo. Altec played the final four weeks of the academy split with the team, but they only managed a single win with him in the lineup and were unable to make playoffs.

Altec returned to the LCS roster to start the summer split, but amidst heavy criticism from the community for benching Xmithie and Hakuho, Immortals lost all of their first four games. To start Week 3, Immortals swapped their academy and LCS rosters, and Altec played out the rest of the split on the academy team. Unfortunately, this stint didn't prove to be any more successful, as the team went 5-7 with Altec in the lineup, and once again didn't qualify for playoffs.
