Play-In

The play-in is a new phase of Worlds introduced in 2017 and consists of 12 teams. Four are fixed: the third-place team from China, Europe, LMS, and North America. The other 8 come from Brazil, CIS, Japan, LAN, LAS, Oceania, SEA, and Turkey. The region from the latter group that places the highest at MSI (out of this set of 8) sends its second-place team to the play-in (in addition to its first-place team to the group stage); each other region sends its first-place team.

Group Stage

Pool 1

As in 2016, this pool consists of the #1 seed from each of the top 4 regions at MSI.

Pool 2

Pool 2 contains the #3 seed from Korea, the #2 seeds from Korea, China, Europe, LMS, and North America; the #1 seed from the worst-performing region at MSI out of those 5 regions; and the #1 seed from the best-performing MSI region out of Brazil, CIS, Japan, LAN, LAS, Oceania, SEA, and Turkey.

Pool 3

Pool 3 contains the 4 teams that advance to the group stage from the play-in.

Example

Pool Participants
1 Korea #1, China #1, Europe #1, North America #1
2 Korea #2, Korea #3, China #2, North America #2, Europe #2, LMS #1, LMS #2, SEA #1
3 Play-In Teams

This is a hypothetical example for purposes of illustration.
