Overview   Match History

Anivia, The Cryophoenix is a Ranged AP Carry who tries to control her enemies with stuns, slows and creating terrain. Her most notable skill is Crystallize, which creates a wall of ice. Anivia will use this wall to separate the enemy or cover her teams escape. She is typically found solo middle lane due to her reliance on Ancient Golem buff and that she has no escapes.

Lore: An eternal guardian, the Cryophoenix has held a solitary vigil over the Freljord for a thousand lifetimes. Sensing a growing corruption of the land itself, Anivia joins the Avarosan in the belief that a united Freljord can defeat the coming darkness.

Anivia is a being of the coldest winter, a mystical embodiment of ice magic, and an ancient protector of the Freljord. She commands all the power and fury of the land itself, calling the snow and bitter wind to defend her home from those who would harm it. A benevolent but mysterious creature, Anivia is eternally bound to keep vigil over the Freljord through life, death, and rebirth.

Anivia is as much a part of the Freljord as the never-ending frost. Long before mortals had ever set foot on the land's frigid tundra, she had lived countless lifetimes and died as many deaths. The beginnings and ends of her eternal cycle always heralded great change, from the calming of raging storms to the ebb and flow of ice ages. It is said that when the cryophoenix dies, an era ends; and when she is reborn, a new era begins.

Though Anivia's past lifetimes have faded from her memory, she knows her purpose: she must protect the Freljord at all costs.

When she was last reborn, Anivia witnessed the rise of a mighty and united human tribe. She guarded their lands with pride as they prospered, but such unity could not last forever. The great tribe fractured into three, and after that upheaval, Anivia watched the people of the Freljord become embroiled in battle. As she strove to calm the turmoil tearing her home apart, Anivia began to sense a greater threat: an ancient evil growing deep within the earth. To her horror, she felt the pure magic of the ice itself become blackened and corrupt. Like blood in water, darkness crept into the Freljord. With her destiny so tied to the power of the land, Anivia knew if such evil took root in her home, that same darkness would find its way into her heart. She could no longer remain a mere guardian - the cryophoenix had to act.

Anivia soon discovered an ally in Ashe, the Frost Archer. Ashe too believed in unification as an end to the Freljord's perpetual strife, and Anivia offered the tribal leader her aid. Now, with war on the horizon, Anivia prepares to fight for peace, but she knows the inevitable truth of her destiny. One day, evil will rise from the ice, and she must destroy it - no matter the cost.

"I am the fury of the blizzard, the bite of the wind, and the cold of the ice. I am the Freljord."

- Anivia, the Cryophoenix

(Innate) : Upon dying, Anivia will revert into an egg and will get an armor and magic resistance modifier of -40 / -25 / -10 / +5 / +20. If the egg can survive for 6 seconds, she is reborn with the same percentage of health that her egg had left. This can only happen once every four minutes regardless of cooldown reduction.

QFlash Frost
Flash Frost.png
(Active) : Anivia summons a shard of ice that flies on a line. The shard will deal magic damage and slow by 20/30/40% (scaling with rank of Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm) for 3 seconds to anyone in its path. The shard will detonate when reaching its max range or if the ability is activated again. When the shard explodes it will deal magic damage to all enemies nearby, stunning them for 1.1 / 1.2 / 1.3 / 1.4 / 1.5 seconds. The magic damage done by both the shard and the detonation is the same, and both will apply the "chilled" debuff on enemies hit for 3 seconds.

Patch History

Patch Notes 7.14

Quote.png A number of abilities in League of Legends grant vision, whether through a debuff on the champions it hits or a summoned object that grants vision around itself. Abilities like Hawkshot obviously should give vision, because that’s their job. We’re starting from removing vision from some summoned terrain - like Pillar of Ice - which are primarily used for other purposes (disruption in this case), yet also give vision for some reason. Brushmaker, on the other hand, generally requires an ally to walk into it to be valuable, and so we think the vision granted makes sense; it’s just castable at too high a range. Overall, we’ll looking at vision-granting abilities in future patches in order to create more consistency around the “uh-oh, they can see me!” experience. Unquote.png
  • Trundle’s E - Pillar of Ice no longer gives vision around the cast area
  • Ivern’s W - Brushmaker cast range changed to 1600 ⇒ 800
  • Anivia’s W - Crystallize no longer gives vision around the cast area

    • Fixed a bug where several forms of loss-of-control effects (Fear, Flee, Taunt, Knockback, and Charm) weren’t properly cancelling Anivia’s R - Glacial Storm

Patch Notes 7.9

Quote.png With Aegis of the Legion's old aura out of the game, squishy champions who were relying on it to give them enough magic resist find themselves a bit on the burstable side. Unquote.png
  • HOORAY: Champions who previously gained no magic resist per level now gain 0.5 per level
  • AFFECTED CHAMPIONS: Ahri, Anivia, Annie, Ashe, Aurelion Sol, Azir, Bard, Brand, Caitlyn, Cassiopeia, Corki, Draven, Elise, Ezreal, Fiddlesticks, Gnar, Graves, Heimerdinger, Janna, Jayce, Jhin, Jinx, Kalista, Karma, Karthus, Kassadin, Kayle, Kennen, Kindred, Kog’Maw, LeBlanc, Lissandra, Lucian, Lulu, Lux, Malzahar, Miss Fortune, Morgana, Nami, Nidalee, Orianna, Quinn, Rakan, Ryze, Sivir, Sona, Soraka, Swain, Syndra, Taliyah, Teemo, Thresh, Tristana, Twisted Fate, Twitch, Urgot, Varus, Vayne, Veigar, Vel’Koz, Viktor, Vladimir, Xayah, Xerath, Yasuo, Ziggs, Zilean, Zyra

Patch Notes 7.6

    • Anivia’s Q - Flash Frost slow no longer overrides her R - Glacial Storm slow (giving movement speed back to affected enemies)

Patch Notes 7.5

    • Fixed a bug with Blackfrost Anivia and Festival Queen Aivia where using flash while casting W - Crystallize would allow enemies and allies to walk through the wall

Patch Notes 7.4

    • Classic Anivia no longer uses Blackfrost Anivia’s falling particles for R - Glacial Storm
    • Buffs on Anivia now correctly align on her body even when she flies around for her Q - Flash Frost and R - Glacial Storm
    • Blackfrost Anivia no longer has two bones jut out of her neck when using her Joke emote. You could say we got rid of her funnybones.

Patch Notes 7.2

    • Fixed a bug where Anivia’s empowered R - Glacial Storm indicator was visible through Fog of War

Patch Notes 7.1

R flashes when it finishes expanding. Fixed a bug with R’s expansion time.
Quote.png Anivia’s changes in 6.23 greatly increased the importance of Glacial Storm’s expansion mechanic. We’re adding a visual cue to signal when the storm’s fully formed. Unquote.png
  • Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm
    • NEW CLARITY: Glacial Storm visually flashes when it becomes fully formed
    • BUGFIX: Glacial Storm now always takes 1.5 seconds to expand, rather than randomly between 1.5 and 1.75 seconds

Patch Notes 6.23

W cooldown lowered. E no longer deals increased damage against targets in R until the storm is fully formed. R forms faster.
Quote.png Anivia’s R-E combo has been a staple of her play for years, but the instant, unavoidable burst and lane pressure it provides overshadows the success Anivia sees from trapping foes in Glacial Storm with well-placed walls and Q stuns. That said, burst damage does seem like a fair reward when Anivia makes use of all the tools available to her. We’re helping her earn her damage payoffs by hastening Glacial Storm’s “cook” time and letting her drop more walls, but giving her less instant gratification. Unquote.png
  • Crystallize.png W - Crystallize
    • COOLDOWN: 25 seconds at all ranks ⇒ 17 seconds at all ranks
  • Frostbite.png E - Frostbite
    • COOLDOWN: 5 seconds at all ranks ⇒ 4 seconds at all ranks
    • CHILLED BONUS: Deals 200% damage to targets recently hit by Q - Flash Frost or R - Glacial Storm ⇒ a fully-formed R - Glacial Storm
  • Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm
    • TIME TO FULLY FORM: 3 seconds ⇒ 1.5 seconds
    • DAMAGE PER SECOND: 80/120/160 ⇒ 40/60/80
    • RATIO: 0.25 ability power ⇒ 0.125 ability power
    • EMPOWERED DAMAGE: Empowered storms deal 150% ⇒ 300% damage (same damage as live)

Patch Notes 6.22

  • Bugfix
    • Blackfrost Anivia's W - Crystallise visuals have been widened to match her other skins (actual hitbox was never broken!)

Patch Notes 6.19

E damage lowered.
Quote.png Anivia’s historically succeeded by establishing control over the battlefield through persistent threat of AoE lockdown. Frostbite is her follow-through when she lands a crowd control ability, but it hits so hard it’s single-handedly winning trades for her. We’re toning Frostbite’s damage down so Anivia has to utilize her entire kit to succeed, rather than leaning on a single ability. Unquote.png

Frostbite.png E - Frostbite

  • DAMAGE: 55/85/115/145/175 ⇒ 50/75/100/125/150
  • CHILLED DAMAGE: 110/170/230/290/350 ⇒ 100/150/200/250/300

Patch Notes 6.11

R cost per second up.
Quote.png Kicking off the patch, we have a minor tune-up (or tune-down) to everyone’s favorite Cryophoenix. Anivia’s doing pretty well since our 6.10 follow-up, but the changes seem to have gone just a hair too far in making her storm too easy to sustain. Glacial Storm should represent a significant investment, so we’re pulling back. Unquote.png

Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm

  • COST: 30/45/60 mana per second ⇒ 40/50/60 mana per second

Patch Notes 6.10

R radius and cast range increased. Mana cost down.
Quote.png The first of many follow-ups to our Midseason mage updates, we begin with Anivia. While we’re confident in the controlling shift we made with the Cryophoenix in 6.9, Anivia as a whole ended up less reliable in the process. With a heavier focus placed on Glacial Storm’s uptime, we’re making it easier for her to maintain her signature zoning tool. Unquote.png

Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm

  • COST PER SECOND: 40/50/60 mana ⇒ 30/40/50 mana
  • CAST RANGE: 685 ⇒ 750
  • INITIAL RADIUS: 150 ⇒ 200
  • SWAGSTORM: Using Zhonya’s Hourglass no longer interrupts Glacial Storm

Patch Notes 6.9

Quote.png One of our oldest champions, Anivia’s always been a power-pick for those willing to weather the storm of her steep mastery curve. While her strategic identity as a counter to heavy sieging is already strong, we saw an opportunity with Midseason to sharpen her traits as a disruptor even further. By focusing power into her already-potent CC, Anivia cements herself as a centerpiece for teams looking to seize control of the battlefield’s neutral ground. Unquote.png
  • General
  • Flash Frost.png Q - Flash Frost
    • DAMAGE: 60/90/120/150/180 ⇒ 60/85/110/135/160
    • RATIO: 0.5 ability power ⇒ 0.4 ability power
    • STUN DURATION: 1 second ⇒ 1.1/1.2/1.3/1.4/1.5 seconds
    • SLOW: 20% ⇒ 20/30/40% (scaling with rank of R - Glacial Storm)
  • Frostbite.png E - Frostbite
    • MISSILE SPEED: 1200 ⇒ 1600
    • CAST RANGE: 650, measured from Anivia’s hitbox center to her opponent’s ⇒ 600, measured from Anivia’s hitbox edge to her opponent’s (overall range buff of ~35)
  • Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm
    • CAST RANGE: 625 ⇒ 685
    • RADIUS: 400 ⇒ 150
    • SLOW: 20% at all ranks ⇒ 20/30/40%
    • REMOVED ATTACK SPEED SLOW: No longer slows attack speed
    • NEW GLACIAL EXPANSION: Now expands to a radius of 400 over 3 seconds
    • NEW FINAL FORM: At maximum size, Glacial Storm’s damage, chill duration and slow are increased by 50%

Patch Notes 6.8

  • Restored icy wind audio for Blackfrost Anivia's Passive - Rebirth revive channel

Patch Notes 5.24

R’s leash range is shorter and chills for less.
Quote.png Anivia’s synergies with the new Keystone Masteries are pushing her to pretty absurd levels of power, especially in a metagame where teams primarily rely on sieging towers to succeed. These changes are all about forcing Anivia to commit herself to danger if she wants to command the same level of respect in controlling and defending objectives. Unquote.png

Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm

  • CHILLED DURATION: 2 seconds ⇒ 1 second
  • MAXIMUM RANGE: 1200 ⇒ 1000

Patch Notes 5.22

  • BASE MANA: 346.04 ⇒ 396.04
  • MANA GROWTH STAT: 53 ⇒ 50

Patch Notes 5.18
"While not the worst at taking neutral objectives thanks to her amazing zoning potential, Dragon and Baron’s inability to be CC’d meant that Anivia’s bonus damage interaction with Frostbite wasn’t working - this changed for Ashe during her rework, and seeing as we’re pretty big fans of consistency we figured we’d fix it as a neat buff for ice birds everywhere."
Frostbite.png E - Frostbite

  • STAY FROSTY: Now treats Dragon and Baron as ‘frosted’ for the purposes of Frostbite’s double damage if they’ve been hit by Flash Frost or Glacial Storm in the last few seconds.

Patch Notes 5.12

  • SPLASH: Anivia has received a splash update!

Patch Notes 4.18

Bird is the word.

"We're hoping to give some extra love for new players picking up Anivia, as they'll have a clearer understanding of how to use this cool chick."

  • Flash Frost.png Q - Flash Frost
    • "NEW" STUNNING INDICATORS: Flash Frost now has a cast indicator to show stun range
    • "NEW" STUNNING CLARITY: Flash Frost now has an icy cloud around its particle to show stun range (only the Anivia player can see this)

Patch Notes 4.5

Anivia's received a small quality-of-life buff to create a clear best use case (if you just want more damage) for Glacial Storm.
  • Glacial Storm.png R - Glacial Storm
    • Now deals a tick of damage when cancelled.

Patch Notes 4.1

Summary: We’ve increased the speed of Anivia’s basic attack projectile and brought down the mana cost of Flash Frost and Crystallize. Additionally, Anivia’s ult will now have a warning effect when she is almost out of Glacial Storm’s range.

We call these kinds of changes “modernizations,” where we bring a champion up-to-date with the current state of the game. Usually this means mana cost changes (typically reductions), but it also extends to playability improvements, like range indicators or gameplay improvements.
