Patch History

v8.17

Proc damage decreased. Lethality increased.

The high amount of upfront damage in the game is something we've been looking to dial back. Last patch we trimmed a lot of the burst damage from various runes; this patch we're looking at items.

LETHALITY : [18] 21
PROC DAMAGE : [30-200]
30-150 damage (at levels 1-18)

v8.6
Nightstalker damage decreased and equalized between ranged and melee champions. Melee basic attacks instantly kill wards disabled by Duskblade. Blackout won't trigger during Red Sweeper.

Nightstalker is responsible for too much of the damage of its core users, making them overbearing when they can purchase it early, and underwhelming if they delay or don't purchase the item. We're pulling some of the strict nuking power out of the item and putting some of that strength into the item's vision control. Some of the lost damage will also be compensated directly into the kits of its core users.

NIGHTSTALKER DAMAGE (MELEE) : [65-320] 30-200
NIGHTSTALKER DAMAGE (RANGED) : [45-300] 30-200
ONE Melee basic attacks instantly kill traps/wards that are disabled by Blackout
REDUNDANCY Blackout won't be triggered if the owner is currently using a Sweeping Lens or Oracle's Alteration

v7.24b

We added 2 lethality to the Serrated Dirk items when preseason began, but it turns out we probably didn't need to. This is a hit to Pantheon, by the way, in case you were CTRL+F'ing him.

 Serrated Dirk

LETHALITY : [12] 10

 Duskblade of Draktharr

LETHALITY : [20] 18

 Edge of Night

LETHALITY : [20] 18

 Youmuu's Ghostblade

LETHALITY : [20] 18

v7.22

LETHALITY : [18] 20

v7.16

Updated VFX to improve clarity

v7.15
Nightstalker proc damage down; ranged proc no longer slows.

While we wanted to make Duskblade a better purchase last patch, we definitely went overboard. We reined in Nighstalker’s damage partway through 7.14 and are following up with a more robust set of changes. Most importantly, Nightstalker is now less effective for ranged champions.

Nightstalker proc

INITIAL PATCH 7.14 DAMAGE : 105-360 (at levels 1-18)
UPDATED PATCH 7.14 DAMAGE : 55-360 (at levels 1-18)
PATCH 7.15 DAMAGE : 65-320 (at levels 1-18) for melee champions, 45-300 (at levels 1-18) for ranged champions
RANGED SLOW Ranged Nightstalker procs no longer slow the target

v7.14

We originally introduced lethality to give us finer control over flat armor penetration’s impact at various points in the game and to separate assassin items from those of other physical damage dealers. As they exist today, lethality items are generally on the weak side and aren’t offering assassins real choice in their builds (just rush Ghostblade every game).
Looking at the options, Youmuu’s Ghostblade (roaming power) and Duskblade of Draktharr (damage proc, vision denial) should be competing for an assassin’s first buy as the pure-offense Dirk upgrades. In practice, Duskblade is behind the curve on pretty much every front. We’re leveling the playing field between the two blades in terms of build path, cost, and stats to create a more compelling choice.
As a result of this work, Ghostblade is reclaiming its monopoly on movement speed among armor penetration items. But, with mobility removed, the Dirk items need a different way to help assassins carry advantages forward. Changing lethality from enemy-scaling to self-scaling fills this gap while advancing our original goals by pushing it further away from bot-laners (who tend to be lower level).
Final note: Dirk’s upgrades have generally lost attack damage and gained lethality. The idea here is similar to our durability work in midseason: siphon strength out of the generalist stat (AD) and into the specialized stat (lethality).

SCALING : Lethality grants armor penetration based on your [target’s] level
CLARITY : Item tooltips now display the current amount of armor penetration lethality is granting you
STATS : Completed lethality items grant more lethality and (except for Edge of Night) less attack damage
MOBILITY Except for Youmuu’s Ghostblade, lethality items no longer grant out-of-combat movement speed

Builds out of Caulfield’s Warhammer instead of B. F. Sword and grants cooldown reduction. Cost decreased. Lethality up, attack damage down. Nightstalker proc scales with level instead of lethality.

Duskblade has the harshest build path of any Dirk upgrade as well as a passive that’s most effective in a glass cannon build (which leaves assassins susceptible to being blown up in fights before they can get their combos off). Both these factors make it unattractive as a first purchase, leaving Youmuu's as the only option for every AD assassin. To make Duskblade more competitive, we’re giving it Youmuu's cost and build path, and ensuring Nightstalker stands on its own even if Duskblade’s the only lethality item an assassin gets to buy.

v7.4
Items that reveal traps no longer disable them.

CARRY-OVER : Also affects Oracle’s Alteration

 Control Ward

HOW LAZY : No longer disables traps (still reveals them!)

 Duskblade of Draktharr

v7.2
Damage after having not been seen increased.

Following up our nudge to Lethality is some love for its marquee item. Much like Infinity Edge or Rabadon’s Deathcap, Duskblade is intended to be the big purchase if you’re all-in on Lethality’s gameplan of murdering everyone that’s not a tank. That said, many champions we’d expect to see with the item (like Kha’Zix or Talon) instead opt for other big ticket AD items like Ravenous Hydra or Infinity Edge itself to push their damage output to the next level. We’re adding some more bite to Duskblade’s effect to make it shine in the situations you’d expect to see it succeed.

NIGHTSTALKER DAMAGE : [50] 75

v6.22
Mini-Death-Mark removed. Deal bonus damage after being unseen. Disable nearby enemy wards when spotted.

Roaming is core to the assassin playstyle, but their items could do more to enable them to gank efficiently. Duskblade of Draktharr now gives assassins a way to...detect… detection and be rewarded for catching champions by surprise.

ATTACK DAMAGE : [75] 65
STABBING SLOWS YOU DOWN No longer grants +5% movement speed
KNIVES MAKE YOU FASTER UNIQUE Passive: + 20 Movement Speed out of Combat
FLAT ARMOR PENETRATION No longer grants 10 flat armor penetration
LETHALITY UNIQUE Passive: +15 lethality (penetration breaks even at level 8)
NIGHT HAS FALLEN No longer deals a portion of damage recently dealt to the target as bonus damage after a delay
SURPRISE UNIQUE Passive - Nightstalker: After being unseen for at least 1 second, your next basic attack will deal 50 (+2 per lethality) true damage on-hit
IT’S WARDED UNIQUE Passive - Blackout: Disable nearby enemy wards for 8 seconds after being spotted by one (90 second cooldown)

v6.14
Now on Twisted Treeline.

Prior to last November’s preseason update, B. F. Sword was too expensive to have a home on Twisted Treeline. The burden of saving for one would have been madness in an environment where marksmen naturally struggled to scale into relevance, so we gave the Treeline its own cheaper, Pickaxe-based alternatives to B. F.’s upgrades. As discussed above, however, things have changed, so we’re now comfortable introducing this suite of items to the Treeline.

EXISTS B. F. Sword and its upgrades now exist on Twisted Treeline!

 Essence Reaver
 The Bloodthirster

 Duskblade of Draktharr

v6.3
New item for assassins. Basic attacks give a mini-death mark on your target.

It's well known that many AD assassins who relied on attack damage items took a hit with the transition to 2016, especially with the changes to Last Whisper. These days the 'core' item build that feels good often only goes to 'build Ghostblade and Maw and hope that's enough to finish them off.' Balancing around core items is something we do for every class, but assassins have been left in the dust - forced to scrape by on whatever the best damage items happen to be, making our balancing points for them somewhat… very inconsistent. Duskblade means we can give those folks a core item that not only helps multiply damage in a full build, but also offers a clear expression of power for those with a gold lead. marksmen have Infinity Edge, mages have Deathcap - and now, assassins have Duskblade. Duskblade's passive, Nightfall, provides a different angle for assassins to contribute meaningfully in a teamfight. Missing health damage is unique in that it can be considered a damage amplification for your team - capitalizing on all the work your allies have done so far - allowing assassins to feel more capable on clean-up duty and less pressured to throw their lives away in pursuit of bopping a marksman.

BUILD PATH : Serrated Dirk + B.F. Sword + 850 gold
TOTAL COST : 3250 gold
ATTACK DAMAGE : 75
BONUS MOVEMENT SPEED : 5%
UNIQUE PASSIVE : +10 Armor Penetration
UNIQUE PASSIVE : Basic attacks on an enemy champion apply Nightfall (120 second cooldown)
