SPY 2019 Spring.png

Splyce is an American esports organization with a European League of Legends team. The organization was acquired by OverActive Media in November 2018. They were previously known as Follow eSports. In November 2019, after a quarterfinal Worlds 2019 run, the team rebranded as MAD Lions E.C..

History[edit]

Splyce was initially announced as Follow eSports on October 29, 2015 as the new brand of Team Dignitas EU, with an initial roster of Wunderwear, Sencux, Kobbe, and Nisbeth.[1] The team inherited Dignitas's seed into the 2016 EU LCS Spring Season. Their jungler was announced two weeks later to be Trashy.[2] In December, the team renamed to Splyce, changing their logo as well.[3]

2016 Season[edit]

EU LCS Spring Split[edit]

Splyce stayed consistently in either seventh place or tied for eighth place in the spring split. Their final record was 5-13, in eighth place ahead of Team ROCCAT and behind Elements. With a favorable promotion tournament seed, Splyce played against Giants Gaming and won 3-2, requalifying for the LCS for the summer split.

EU LCS Summer Split[edit]

The introduction of Support player Mikyx prior to the beginning of the summer split seemingly brought new life to the Splyce squad. The team climbed through the rankings of the EU LCS through excellent macro play and the strenghts of their solo lanes and jungler, ending in second place and earning a Semifinals bye for the Summer Playoffs. After a 3-2 victory against H2k Gaming, they faced reigning Spring Split champions G2 Esports in the Finals and lost 1-3, thus having to face Unicorns of Love in the Regionals Gauntlet Finals in order to qualify for the 2016 Season World Championship. The rookie team was triumphant, taking the gauntlet series 3-2.

2016 World Championship[edit]

Splyce was drafted into Group D as a third seed team, along with Team SoloMid, Royal Never Give Up, and Samsung Galaxy. They ended in last place with a 1-5 score but still managed to have respectable showings, going head to head with TSM in an extremely close 45 minutes game in Week 1 and taking down RNG in decisive fashion in their Week 2 rematch.

2017 Season[edit]

Spring Split[edit]

As part of Riot's reorganization of the EU LCS spring split, Splyce was drafted into Group B along with H2k Gaming, Unicorns of Love, Origen, and Team Vitality. Consistently decent performances in Regular Season meant that they ended up comfortably in 3rd place of their group. In quarterfinals this trend continued as they lost to 2nd place from group A Misfits in a close series 2-3.

Summer Split[edit]

Going into Summer Split in a nearly identical group where promoted Mysterious Monkeys replaced Origen they performed pretty much exactly like in Spring and ended up in third place of their group once again. This time they were knocked out of quarterfinals by G2 Esports. Reaching playoffs in both splits was enough to earn them a last chance at participating at another World Championship through winning the Regional Finals but they failed to do so being swept in the first round already by H2k.

2018 Season[edit]

Spring Split[edit]

Splyce rebuilt their whole roster in 2018. The new rebuilt roster consists of Odoamne, Xerxe, Nisqy, Kobbe, and kaSing. The team tied 2nd place in the 2018 EU LCS Spring Split with G2 Esports, both having a 11-7 score. Splyce lost the tiebreaker and was placed 3rd seed going into playoffs. The team played Team ROCCAT in the first round and quickly won 3-0, advancing to the second round where they would face G2 Esports once again. Splyce lost the series 1-3. The team later faced Team Vitality in the third-place match and won, earning them 3rd place in the Spring Split.

Summer Split[edit]

Splyce placed 6th in the 2018 EU LCS Summer Split with a 9-9 record, barely qualifying for playoffs. They would face FC Schalke 04 in the first round in playoffs and lost the series 2-3, forcing them to compete in the Regional Finals in order to go to Worlds. Splyce played Misfits in their first round and won the close match 3-2. They would then lose the following round to G2 Esports 2-3, failing to make it to Worlds.

2019 Season[edit]

After it was reported that negotiations with other organizations had failed, Splyce was rumored to be rejoining the EU LCS as part of the 2019 European franchise program.[4] It was originally reported that their partnership application had been rejected.[5] On November 20, Riot Games confirmed Splyce as one of the ten partner teams for the LEC 2019 Spring Split.[6]

Spring Split[edit]

For the 2019 Season Nisqy decided to go back to North America and Odoamne and kaSing left the team as well. Splyce signed Vizicsacsi from Schalke 04, Norskeren after his decent rookie season with ROCCAT, and Humanoid who played for several regional teams in Europe. Mixed performances throughout the Spring Split ended with them finishing in 4th place finish with a 11-7 record during Regular Season. In Round 1 of playoffs they faced off against SK Gaming and after losing game 1 they dominated the rest of the series to face Fnatic in Round 2 for a place at the offline finals in Rotterdam. They lost the series 1-3 despite having good early games in games 1 and 2 and almost coming back from the brink of defeat in game 3.

Summer Split[edit]

Going into Summer Split Splyce kept playstyle and roster similarly but Humanoid showed that he got more comfortable on stage and managed to take more of a carry role. After a pretty good split and securing top 3 Splyce had the chance to get a direct ticket to Athens but lost both the direct match against Fnatic as well as their last match against Misfits in the last week of regular season. They chose to play Rogue in quarterfinals but probably regret that decision shortly after when they got absolutely dominated over all 3 games in a clean sweep defeat. In Round 1 of gauntlet they faced Origen who struggled in summer but had a lot of time to prepare for this match. A strong showing by them in game 1 quickly turned around expectations though and was the opening for a competitive series. Splyce won games 2 and 3 before getting getting destroyed in game 4 again. Despite convincingly but slowly winning game 5 and the series many people gave Splyce barely a chance in Round 2 against Schalke 04 but they gained back their confidence from beating Origen and clean swept Schalke 04 to play Fnatic to determine whether they go to Worlds as 2nd or 3rd seed. Despite their devastating series against G2 Fnatic swept Splyce relatively easily which meant that Splyce started Worlds in Play-In-Stage where they were drawn into Group B with Japan’s DetonatioN FocusMe and LLA’s Isurus Gaming.

World Championship[edit]

After a clean 2-0 start they struggled a bit on Day 2 of the group but despite losing to DFM they secured 1st place in the group. In Round 2 they faced LCL's Unicorns of Love and barely managed to beat them in a very close 3-2 series which turned out to be the series with the most kills in Worlds history. For Group Stage they were drawn into group B, alongside LPL 1st seed FunPlus Phoenix, LMS 2nd seed J Team and VCS 1st seed GAM Esports. After a 1-2 start they especially in form of midlaner Humanoid stepped up on the deciding day of groups and went 3-0 including a upset vs FPX before losing the tiebreaker rematch against them for 1st seed. For quarterfinals they were drawn to play against LCK 1st seed SK Telecom T1 who lived up to their status of tournament favourite and ended Splyce's second Worlds appearance with a dominant 3-1.

After Worlds, Vizicsacsi retired and Xerxe and Kobbe left for other teams. Rumors began to circulate as early as September that the Splyce brand would be dropped, and the team would be rebranded to MAD Lions E.C., a Spanish organization that Splyce's parent company had acquired earlier in 2019. On November 21st, this was confirmed, and the remaining members of the organization left.
