Kennenn The Heart of the Tempest is ranged caster. His primary resource is energy, akin to Akali and Lee Sin. His passive, Mark of the Storm, is placed on a champion whenever they are hit by one of Kennen's spells. At three stacks of Mark of the Storm, the target is stunned. He can often initiate team fights by using his ability Electrical Surge and then casting Slicing Maelstrom. Kennen is commonly played in both Top and Mid lane. Recent competitive play in Europe has also displayed his capability as an AD Carry.

Champion Spotlight

Description

Lore: There exists an ancient order originating in the Ionian Isles dedicated to the preservation of balance. Order, chaos, light, darkness -- all things must exist in perfect harmony for such is the way of the universe. This order is known as the Kinkou and it employs a triumvirate of shadow warriors to uphold its causes in the world. Kennen is one of these shadow warriors, entrusted with the sacred duty of Coursing the Sun - tirelessly conveying the justice of the Kinkou.

Kennen was born in Bandle City and it was said that in his first living moments he bolted first from the womb and second from the midwife who delivered him. His parents had thought that he would outgrow his boundless energy, but as he matured his energy found no limits and was matched only by his unnerving speed. Despite his astonishing gifts, he remained unnoticed (or at least uncaught, as he was quite the prankster) until, on a dare, he ran straight up the great outer wall of the Placidium. When word of this feat reached Kinkou ears, Kennen was quickly and quietly brought in for an audience. He found that the role of the Heart of the Tempest suited him, frenetically delivering both the word and the punishments of the Kinkou across the realm. He now works with his fellows Akali and Shen to enforce the balance of Valoran.

(Innate) : Kennen's abilities add Marks of the Storm to opponents which last for 6 seconds. An opponent is stunned for 1.25 seconds upon receiving 3 Marks of the Storm, and Kennen receives 25 energy. The stun has a diminished effect, and will only stun for approximately 0.5 seconds if applied more than once within 6 seconds.

He also gains the ability to pass through units, dealing magic damage to all enemy units in the process, and restoring 40 energy from the first enemy he hits. This ability only deals 50% damage to minions. Additionally, for 4 seconds Kennen's armor and magic resistance are increased.

While Lightning Rush is active, he can activate it again, to cancel the first part of the ability.

Patch Notes 7.13

W-empowered attack bonus is now base plus AP and bonus AD ratios. Hurricane no longer stacks W. E ratio increased.
Quote.png As a basic-attack-focused mage, Kennen has access to both physical- and magic-damage focused builds. Choosing between them affects the strengths Kennen brings to the table: the physical build gives him more consistent, unrelenting damage, while the magic build makes him a burstier threat to deal with. In theory. The balance between these builds is off-kilter: AD Kennen's sustained damage is actually pretty bursty, and AP Kennen isn't bursting hard enough. We're giving AP Kennen better scaling, but our work on AD Kennen's a bit more nuanced. Primarily, we're removing Electrical Surge as a repeatable damage spike in the physical build. Surge’s AD scaling is down, and in the (usual) case where Kennen picks up Runaan's Hurricane, it no longer triples Electrical Surge's stack rate. The nuance is in the ratio switch from total AD to bonus, a change meant to mitigate the impact to bot lane Kennen, who we’d like to keep viable as a niche strategic option. Switching to bonus AD removes the innate disadvantage bot lane Kennen faces with total AD scaling (bot laners are generally lower-level than solo laners, so their base AD hasn’t scaled as much) while letting us make a smaller ratio reduction than if we had stuck with total AD. Quote.png Kennen's niche of "dive the enemy team and stun kids" is well-defined, but the randomness of who his ult zaps means his teamfighting impact is often left up to chance. Sometimes Slicing Maelstrom focus-fires a priority target on the far edge of its range, other times it ignores the squishy that Kennen’s right beside as they saunter off to safety. This can be just as frustrating for Kennen’s opponents; it all depends on who draws the short straw. We’re removing Slicing Maelstrom’s randomness to make it more consistent for both sides: Kennen will always stun enemies he’s allowed to stay close to, so it’s never a waste of resources to peel him off your backline. On a separate note, we cleaned up a few weird numbers in Kennen’s other abilities. Notably, Electrical Surge’s range was overly generous, so we’re trimming it to keep Kennen in harm’s way if he wants to jolt his enemies. Unquote.png

"For someone that runs into your entire team (talk about a big risk), it's pretty lame when the difference between a game-winning 5-man stun or an over-confident failure comes down to random chance. Slicing Maelstrom's unique feel as a multi-hit storm is cool, so we're just looking for ways to amp up that electric boogaloo. Haaayaaa!"

"Like many champions before him (Veigar, Karthus, and Cho'gath come to mind) Kennen has been held back by inconsistencies in the timing of his abilities. After a much-needed round of re-coding, we've fixed an issue with Electrical Surge while also tuning Slicing Maelstrom. It's worth noting for Kennen's R that this is a slight late game nerf to his single target ult burst, but a buff to his area-effect speed."

Electrical Surge

    • If Kennen casts Electrical Surge just as Mark of the Storm is consumed by another ability, he'll still deal damage and add a stack as normal
