Once a swordmaster in the warhosts of Noxus, Riven is an expatriate in a land she previously tried to conquer. She rose through the ranks on the strength of her conviction and her brutal efficiency, and was rewarded with a legendary runic blade—however, on the Ionian front, Riven’s faith in her homeland was tested and ultimately broken. Having severed all ties to the empire, she now wanders with her shattered sword, seeking to atone for a past she cannot fully recall.

Built on perpetual conflict, Noxus has never had a shortage of war orphans. Her father lost to an unnamed battle and her mother to the girl’s own stubborn birth, Riven was raised on a farm run by the empire on the rocky hillsides of Trevale.

Physical strength and ferocious will kept the children alive and working on the hard scrap of land, but Riven hungered for more than simply bread on the table. She watched conscriptors from regional warbands visiting the farms, year after year, and in them, she saw a chance at the life she dreamed of. When she finally pledged the empire her strength, she knew Noxus would embrace her as the daughter she longed to be.

Riven proved a natural soldier. Young as she was, her years of hard labor allowed her to quickly master the weight of a longsword taller than herself. Her new family was forged in the heat of battle, and Riven saw her bond to her brothers- and sisters-in-arms as unbreakable.

So exceptional was her dedication to the empire, that Boram Darkwill himself recognized her with a runic blade of dark stone, enchanted by a pale sorceress within his court. The weapon was heavier than a kite shield and nearly as broad—perfectly suited to Riven’s tastes.

Not long after, the warhosts set sail for Ionia as part of the long-planned Noxian invasion.

As this new war dragged on, it became clear that Ionia would not kneel. Riven’s unit was assigned to escort another warband making its way through the embattled province of Navori. The warband’s leader, Emystan, had employed a Zaunite alchymist, eager to test a new kind of weapon. Across countless campaigns, Riven would gladly have given her life for Noxus, but now she saw something awry in these other soldiers—something that made her deeply uncomfortable. The fragile amphorae they carried on their wagons had no purpose on any battlefield she could imagine...

The two warbands met increasingly fierce resistance, as if even the land itself sought to defy them. During a heavy rain storm, with mud pouring down the hillsides, Riven and her warriors were stranded with their deadly cargo—and it was then that the Ionian fighters revealed themselves. Seeing the danger, Riven called to Emystan for support.

The only answer she received was a flaming arrow, fired out from the ridgeline, and Riven understood this was no longer a war to expand the borders of Noxus. It was to be a complete annihilation of the enemy, no matter the cost.

The wagon was hit straight on. Instinctively, Riven drew her sword, but it was too late to protect anyone but herself. Chemical fire burst from the ruptured containers, and screams filled the night—both Ionian and Noxian falling victim to an agonizing, gruesome death. Shielded from the scorching, poisonous mists by the magic of her blade, she bore unwilling witness to scenes of horror and betrayal that would haunt her forever.

For Riven, memories of the time that followed come only in fragments, and nightmares. She bound her wounds. She mourned the dead. But, most of all, she came to hate the sword that saved her life. The words carved into its surface mocked her, reminding her of all she had lost. She would find a way to break it, severing her last tie to Noxus, before the dawn.

But when the blade was finally shattered, still she found no peace.

Stripped of the faith and conviction that had bolstered her entire life, Riven now wanders Ionia’s battle scarred landscape in self-imposed exile, seeking atonement from those who cannot forgive: the land, the dead, and herself.

“A warrior’s blade reflects the truth in their heart. Mine is black, and broken.”

-  Riven

In Noxus, any citizen may rise to power regardless of race, gender, or social standing - strength is all that matters. It was with committed faith in this ideal that Riven strove to greatness. She showed early potential as a soldier, forcing herself to master the weight of a long sword when she was barely its height. She was ruthless and efficient as a warrior, but her true strength lay in her conviction. She entered battles without any trace of doubt in her mind: no ethical pause, no fear of death.

Riven became a leader amongst her peers; a poster child of the Noxian spirit. So exceptional was her passion that the High Command recognized her with a black stone rune sword forged and enchanted with Noxian sorcery. The weapon was heavier than a kite shield and nearly as broad - perfectly suited to her tastes. Soon after, she was deployed to Ionia as part of the Noxian invasion.

What began as war quickly became extermination. Noxian soldiers followed the terrifying Zaunite war machines across fields of death. It wasn't the glorious combat for which Riven trained. She carried out the orders of her superiors, terminating the remnants of a beaten and fractured enemy with extreme prejudice.

As the invasion continued, it became clear that the Ionian society would not be reformed, merely eliminated. During one bitter engagement, Riven's unit became surrounded by Ionian forces. They called for support as the enemy closed in around them. What they received instead was a barrage of biochemical terror launched by Singed. Riven watched as around her Ionian and Noxian alike fell victim to an unspeakably gruesome fate. She managed to escape the bombardment, though she could not erase the memory.

Counted dead by Noxus, she saw an opportunity to start anew. She shattered her sword, severing ties with the past, and wandered in self-imposed exile - on a quest to seek atonement and a way to save the pure Noxian vision in which she believed.

"There is a place between war and murder in which our demons lurk."

OBSERVATION

The weight Riven carries seems to hang in the air around her. The remnants of her Noxian armor are tarnished, they speak of her absence from duty. The broken sword she carries is, in itself, so massive that imagination falters to conceive of the blade’s original size.

The echo of battle lingers with her. It smolders in her eyes, tenses in her grip, and coils in her step. It never leaves her. She is there now still, in the midst of it, as she enters the marble doors.

REFLECTION

Riven’s fingers played along the edges of her blade’s runic inscription – an idle habit, long deprived of meaning. Her thoughts went where they often went in darkness: to dark memories. She gritted her teeth. There was nothing quite so cutting as the recollection of a guilty mind.

She twitched, involuntarily, as the scene of her death unraveled before her.

A damp fog yawned across the valley floor sheepishly, as though reluctant to conceal the horrors of the day. The gagging stench would have betrayed its effort, had not the smell so thoroughly permeated the Ionian countryside. Death was now a permanent resident of the somber isle, and its purchase grew with every passing hour. After so many similar fields, Riven no longer took account of it.

Dusk was settling as the company marched on, the stamp of their boots thick and dull crossing the grimy stretch. Riven’s own boots were becoming stained a deep brown by the mud. She felt a pang of nausea as she realized it wasn’t rainwater that dampened the soil.

She forced the thought out of her head. There would be more fields, more fogs, more harrowing muck – she could process it all later. “Focus is essential,” her drill instructor used to bark. “A lot happens in the chaos of battle, but you can only accomplish one thing at a time.” Now it was marching.

Fury Company had trudged for days to catch up with the rest of the 42nd Standard, and the dreary trail through the Zaunite Melters’ aftermath was... messy. War was all about casualties, but the rising number of civilian losses was staggering. The High Command had expected the peace-loving Ionians to roll over and surrender in the face of Noxus’ military juggernaut. Instead the resistance was fierce and unrelenting. For a society that preached pacifism, the Ionians didn’t hesitate to get their hands dirty.

Riven was impressed.

This was a particularly grim scene. The Coeur Valley was one of the few passageways through which the Melters could cross the foothills of northern Shon-Xan. The Ionians had made a desperate stand there that morning, hoping to stem or slow the pace of Zaun’s death machines. It was a telling failure for Ionia. They hadn’t even managed to scramble half the forces Noxian intelligence had predicted, and ample countermeasures were taken long before the Melters attempted the pass. Still, for such a meager resistance, Riven couldn’t help but notice the abundance of Noxian uniforms littered amongst the dead.

A day or two behind, the Noxian cleanup effort was requesting reinforcements.

Riven’s attention was drawn to the path by the sound of advancing footsteps. Someone was approaching the group from the front. Riven raised her blade high, halting the company and eclipsing herself beneath it. It was a true Noxian weapon, built to instill fear at sight alone.

The figure emerged from the fog. It was a girl, a couple years older than Riven, stumbling as she walked. Her clothes were torn and matted with blood. When she saw the company, her eyes went wide.

“No no no no no,” she muttered. “No more, please.” She fell to her knees and started weeping.

Riven ordered two men to retrieve the girl. Handling civilians was a chore that had wearied the men over the past several weeks. They’d been trained to kill soldiers in battle, not to dispatch helpless bystanders. Ionia didn’t even have a standing military.

Only the strong survive, Riven reminded herself.

The two soldiers reached the girl and stood to either side, each silently hoping the other would take the lead. Riven was about to intervene when the girl made a quick motion and a thin red mist appeared in front of her. The two soldiers crumpled, dead before they hit the ground.

“Ambush!” Her warning was lost amongst the cries of her soldiers. On all sides of the company, corpses were rising, weapons in hand, and charging into their ranks. Except they weren’t dead. Their eyes were very much alive with hateful resolve. Riven remembered the intelligence reports: less than half the expected opposition. It was a trap. The Ionians had planned this all along.

Already the rear guard was overtaken. Riven screamed for the unit to collapse to a defensive formation. The army needed to be warned. She drew a distress flare from her belt and fired into the darkening sky. Pale green light illuminated the entire valley.

One of the Ionians leapt out at Riven. She slashed upward, bisecting him lengthwise. The Ionians had the advantage, but Riven wasn’t one to surrender. If they could defeat her in combat, they deserved this victory. The strong would prevail.

The remaining Noxian soldiers tightened their ranks, backs to each other. Nearly half the company was already dead or dying. The Ionians were taking their time now, savoring the growing Noxian despair.

They were surrounded and outnumbered. Her men were tired, demoralized. The Ionians, by contrast, were fueled by their hate. She wondered how long they had lain there, amongst the bodies of fallen friends, waiting for this moment. She tightened her grip on the sword. One way or another, she would end this.

A blinding ball of light erupted thirty feet in front of her, sending Ionians flying. Riven spun, looking for a source, just as another explosion hit the edge of the Noxian circle. Riven’s ears were ringing, all she could hear was her heartbeat. Noxian and Ionian soldiers were in chaos, some fighting, some running, some… clawing at their skin.

And then she realized it. The Melters had opened fire on them.

Only the strong survive, she repeated… but that was meaningless here. Nobody would survive. By all rights, the Ionians should have won this fight, but they too would die. How did this follow the Noxian way?

As she fled the cursed valley, explosions rocked the ground around her. Soldiers on both sides were subjected to horrific, unspeakable deaths. Something changed in her then. The conviction with which she charged boldly to war had evaporated, and without it she was… lost.

The memory neared its conclusion. Though she’d relived it a thousand times over, Riven never understood why that day went the way it did. She didn’t know why Noxus depended on Zaun’s horrific techmaturgy instead of its own military. She didn’t know why she didn’t see the ambush coming. She didn’t know why she survived. “Why do you want to join the League, Riven?” Behind her, the weeping girl stood, matted in blood, tears running down her cheeks. But the voice was out of place.

“This isn’t right…” Riven started, but the valley around her was melting away. This was some kind of trick.

“Why do you want to join the League, Riven?”

“What are you-”

“Why do you want to join the League?” Impatience.

“I don’t know!” Riven spat. She was stung by the invasion of her mind. She’d lived with this memory for years, but it was something she wouldn’t, couldn’t share. She took a deep breath, “I fought for something once, but it was a lie.” Spoken in her own voice, the words hurt to hear. “I still love Noxus, I never stopped. But now… I want to fight on my own terms.”

“How does it feel, exposing your mind?”

Riven let the question turn in her mind. So many times she wanted to confide in someone, to let someone else shoulder the burden. But telling the story – even watching it through her own eyes – didn’t ease the pain. It was hers alone, and some things could never be shared.

“Exposed or not, it changes nothing.”

Then the girl was gone, and she was alone in the Institute. Her broken sword glowed dimly at her side. The illusion was invasive, but she’d almost forgotten the former heft of her sword. As if in response, a faint green outline played out from the shard, tracing the blade’s former curve. She felt a sudden wash of reassurance. Perhaps she wasn’t so lost after all.

95/125/155/185/215

v7.10
Timing of Q animation cancelling is more consistent. If you don’t know what animation cancelling is, you should just skip this section.

While animation cancelling has been integrated into Riven’s coding for some time now, there are still a lot of timing inconsistencies that make learning her frustrating, especially for players on higher-latency connections. We’re cleaning these up so mastering Riven feels like a test of your reflexes, not your internet connection.

General

CONSOLIDATION : Runic Blade’s buff duration, Broken Wings’s recast window, and Blade of the Exile’s buff duration are now tracked as timers overlaid above their ability icons, rather than via buff bar icons

Broken Wings.png Q - Broken Wings

CONSISTENCY : The timing around when Riven becomes able to animation cancel Q casts, as well as how long she has to animation cancel, have both been made more consistent
NO FUN : Riven can no longer joke, taunt, or laugh during Broken Wings’s animations
PING ME PLS : Broken Wings can more reliably target units on high-latency environments
WHAT? : Fixed a bug where the knockback on Broken Wings’s third cast ended sooner than intended if it interrupted a different displacement effect or if the target collided with terrain

Valor.png E - Valor

SHOW IT : Fixed a bug where spell queueing sometimes didn’t properly work when casting Valor during Broken Wings’s animation

v6.17
R damage up.

Riven has been struggling against too many top laners for too long, so it’s time to bring out the buff bat. Given how snowbally Riven can get, we understand that’s a scary sentence. When Riven is at her best, she’s picking the right all-in, making a flashy play, and coming out on top. We’re sharpening the tools she needs to shine in those situations.

Blade of the Exile.png R - Blade of the Exile

WIND SLASH MINIMUM DAMAGE : [ 80/120/160] 100/150/200
WIND SLASH MAXIMUM DAMAGE : [ 240/360/480] 300/450/600

v7.16
Passive stacks no longer proc against wards.

Changing Runic Blade to be consistent with the on-hit context above.

Runic Blade.png Passive - Runic Blade

WARDS AREN’T PEOPLE : Runic Blade charges no longer proc against wards

v6.1
Passive ratio increased.

Another patch, another Riven buff (I'll take words we never thought we'd type for 500, Meddler). Not much has changed since the last time we met - itemization isn't great for champions like Riven, and while her health regen increase showed promise, it didn't exactly move her as much as we'd like. Handing back some early-game strength should let her work where she shines most - without contributing to her endgame combo potential.

Runic Blade.png Passive - Runic Blade

ratio : [0.2 - 0.5 total attack damage (from levels 1-18) ] 0.25 - 0.5 total attack damage (from levels 1-18)

v5.24
Health regen up.

You’re not dreaming - these are Riven buffs. Anyone playing attack-damage champions that don’t synergise with crit or attack speed is feeling a little sad these days. Just like last patch with Kha’Zix and Zed, this won’t improve heavily until we figure out some item-related solutions, but health regen should help her not lose her lane as often while we work it all out.

General

BASE health REGEN : [3.4] 5.4

v5.22
Q works as intended.

As funny as it is to see Riven bonk on walls, this wasn't intended.

Broken Wings.png Q - Broken Wings

ACTUALLY BROKEN WINGS : Fixed a bug where the 3rd strike from Broken Wings wouldn't let you cross terrain if cast a certain way

v5.21
R cooldown up.

Riven's a champion that's equal parts impressive and frustrating when she succeeds, turning the battle lines into a blur of knock-ups and danger pings, leaving her opponents without many options. For a champion whose 3 basic abilities are so powerful on their own, Blade of the Exile's cooldown's always been finely tuned in concert with her access to cooldown reduction. Now, however, with the growing popularity of things like cooldown runes and The Black Cleaver, it's never been easier for Riven to hit the 40% cap and start breaking the laws of physics.

Increasing the cooldown of Riven's ultimate won't move the needle too much once she reaches that point, but stretches enough of her engagement window to make a difference in the skirmishes and scraps Riven's face along the way to make-or-break her snowball.

Blade of the Exile.png R - Blade of the Exile

COOLDOWN : [110/80/50 seconds] 130/95/60 seconds

v5.9
Movement speed lowered. Wind Slash's speed reduced.

"Known for fast-paced combos and even faster executions, Riven's a flurry of strikes and shouts that every solo laner has to pay respect to. We're toning down this blade-wielding blitzkreig by shaving some of her mobility and reliable damage, meaning she'll have to rely on getting up-close and personal with her abilities if she wants to enjoy the same level of effectiveness."
  • General
    • MOVEMENT SPEED : 345 340
  • Wind Slash.png R - Wind Slash
    • MISSILE SPEED : 2200 1600

v4.2

We lowered Riven’s base health regen and increased the power of Valor’s shield.

We’re reinforcing one of Riven’s core philosophies: she's a champion who should rely on mitigating or avoiding damage to be successful. Enemies who harass Riven should feel rewarded for hitting her when her defenses are down, while Riven players can feel better about using her buffed shield to prevent that damage in the first place.

  • General
    • BASE HEALTH REGEN :: 5.5 per 5s ⇒ 2.5 per 5s
  • Valor.jpg E - Valor
    • SHIELD :: 70/100/130/160/190 ⇒ 90/120/150/180/210

v4.1
Summary: We lowered Riven’s base attack damage but increased her attack damage per level to compensate. Additionally, Broken Wings’ damage has been decreased and Valor’s shield duration was shortened.

Riven’s burst damage is just too high at early levels, so we’re dulling her blade. Broken Wings scaling off total AD from bonus AD means that Riven will do better when she’s behind (because she won’t be able to buy so much raw AD), but worse when she’s far ahead. We’re reducing the duration of Valor to hit some of Riven’s flexibility in lane – if she’s going to rely on Valor’s shield to trade damage, she’ll need to commit quickly or risk losing the shield.

  • General
    • Base attack damage reduced to 54 (from 56.7)
    • Attack damage per level increased to 3 (from 2.7)
  • BrokenWings.jpg Q - Broken Wings
    • Damage per strike decreased to 10/30/50/70/90 (+40/45/50/55/60% total attack damage) (from 30/55/80/105/130 (+70% bonus attack damage))
  • Valor.jpg E - Valor
    • Shield duration reduced to 1.5 seconds (from 2.5 seconds)

v3.15

  • We've improved Riven's running animation!

v3.10a
Summary: Riven can now leap over walls with the third hit of Broken Wings.

Context: Riven's Broken Wings started crossing walls on live following a few engine fixes. We looked at this and decided we want to fully support the emergent gameplay while cleaning up the ability’s environmental interactions. This change promotes Riven’s high mobility playstyle and skirmish play pattern, so we’ll balance around it rather than simply remove the change if it affects her power significantly.

  • General
    • Fixed an issue where several of Riven's particle effects were missing
  • Broken Wings
    • Third hit now knocks up affected targets rather than knocking them back
    • Only the third cast can now leap over walls
    • Hitbox has been retuned to more closely match the particles

v3.09

  • Broken Wings
    • Fixed a bug that made it possible to chain more than 3 strikes

v3.05

  • Wind Slash
    • Fixed a bug where Riven could cast Wind Slash a second time after using Zhonya's Hourglass

v3.02

  • Runic Blade
    • Adjusted damage to 15-45% of her total Attack Damage (based on champion level) from 5-15 (+0.5 bonus attack damage)
  • Broken Wings
    • Fixed a bug that was causing Broken Wings to improperly apply its splash damage if Valor was cast too recently

v1.0.0.154

  • Base health regen reduced to 6 from 10.4
  • Health regen per level reduced to 0.5 from 0.9
  • Valor
    • Shield amount increased to 70 / 100 / 130 / 160 / 190 from 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 / 180
  • Blade of the Exile
    • Cooldown increased to 110 / 80 / 50 seconds from 75 / 60 / 45
    • Targeting cone is now attached to  Riven

v1.0.0.152

  • Base Movement Speed increased by 25.

v1.0.0.141

  • If Broken Wings' movement extends past Riven's current movement order location, that order will be cancelled (she will no longer automatically walk backwards to that point)

v1.0.0.136

  • Fixed a bug where Riven could get locked out of moving during her third cast of Broken Wings

v1.0.0.134

  • Blade of the Exile's allied ultimate HUD indicator will now remain green until the shockwave cast is used

v1.0.0.132

  • Base movement speed reduced to 320 from 325
  • Base health regen reduced to 10.4 per 5 seconds from 12
  • Health regen per level reduced to 0.9 per 5 seconds from 1
  • Broken Wings base damage increased to 30 / 55 / 80 / 105 / 130 from 30 / 50 / 70 / 90 / 110
  • Ki Burst base damage reduced to 50 / 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 from 50 / 90 / 130 / 170 / 210

v1.0.0.130

  • Blade of the Exile tooltip updated to display how much attack damage you will gain. It has also been clarified to state that Blade of the Exile scales off total attack damage, not bonus attack damage.

v1.0.0.128

  • Fixed a bug that caused Riven to stop moving after certain commands.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Ki Shout and Broken Wings to temporarily leave dead unpathable minions behind.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Riven's collision radius to be improperly calculated.

v1.0.0.127

  • Broken Wings
    • Now counts as an attack command when you use it to lock-onto a target.
    • Slightly extended duration of collision ignoring with minions after using this ability

September 20th Hotfix

  • Attack Speed per level increased to 3.5 from 2.9
  • Base Armor increased to 15 from 12
  • Broken Wings bonus attack damage ratio increased to 0.7 from 0.6
  • Ki Shout cast time decreased to 0.25 from 0.5
  • Valor
    • Shield increased to 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 from 40 / 70 / 100 / 130 / 160
    • Cooldown decreased to 10 / 9 / 8 / 7 / 6 from 11 / 10 / 9 / 8 / 7
  • Wind Slash
