  • Biography
Sona has no memories of her true parents. As an infant, she was found abandoned on the doorstep of an Ionian adoption house, nestled atop an ancient instrument in an exquisite case of unknown origins. She was an unusually well-behaved child, always quiet and content. Her caretakers were sure she would find a home quickly, but it soon became apparent that what they mistook for uncommon geniality was actually an inability to speak or to produce any sound whatsoever. Sona remained at the adoption house until her teens, watching in hopeless silence as prospective adopters passed her by. During this time, the caretakers sold her unusual instrument to anxious collectors, hoping to build her a trust. For a myriad of bizarre and unexpected reasons, however, it would be returned, or simply appear again outside the house.

When a wealthy Demacian woman named Lestara Buvelle learned of the instrument, she immediately embarked to Ionia. When the caretakers showcased the instrument for her, she rose wordlessly and explored the house, stopping outside Sona's room. Without hesitation, Lestara adopted her and left a generous donation for the instrument. With Lestara's guidance, Sona discovered a deep connection with the instrument which Lestara called an 'etwahl'. In her hands, it played tones which stilled or quivered the hearts of those around her. Within months, she was headlining with the mysterious etwahl for sold-out audiences. She played as though plucking heartstrings, effortlessly manipulating the emotions of her listeners - all without a single written note. In secret, she discovered a potent and deadly use for her etwahl, using its vibrations to slice objects from a distance. She honed this discipline in private, mastering her gift, that she might be prepared should a fitting recital require the harmony of her talents.

Activating Sona's basic abilities creates a unique 400-radius aura that lasts 3 seconds, setting a 0.5 second cooldown on her other basic abilities.

Sona’s recent changes have solidified her identity as the hard-scaling utility support, but her scaling is kicking in a bit too early. Her power should rise over time, but the key phrase there is “over time”. Late game scaling doesn’t start at level 6, so we’re muting Sona’s early ranks of Crescendo to give enemies a chance to punish her before she gets to her late-game power.

However, punishing Sona is also proving too hard overall: she may be squishy, but she is often too speedy for opponents to capitalize on her mistakes. We’re trimming some of her elusiveness so that opponents can feel better about catching her out of position.

We knew going into 6.14 that speeding up Sona's gameplay would be a significant buff. Though we threw in a few power-downs to compensate, it's clear at this point those adjustments weren't enough to keep Sona in line. We're making a few immediate changes to tone her back down, then see if we need to follow up again in 6.15. NOTE: Because these are quick changes, Sona's tooltips may be out of whack until we can update them next patch!

Things have been quiet for Sona over the past few seasons, so the sheer volume of changes here may look intimidating. In actuality, they all lead to one simple outcome: “Sona plays more music.” Let’s begin.

Sona shares a problem with many supports: it feels like she’s not doing much, even when she’s doing a lot. To tackle that problem, we’re playing into her unique game of musical buffs. Here's how it works: as fights unfold, Sona cycles between abilities, sending pulses of utility to nearby allies. Spellcasting activates Power Chord, offering Sona choices in how to neutralize her foes. These strengths grant Sona flexibility as the maven of extended engagements.

Here's where the feel-bad problem lies: Sona’s cadence is too slow to fulfill that fantasy. Dead air between beats creates downtime for both auras and Power Chords, relegating Sona to the background track. A remastered Crescendo passive solves that problem as Sona levels up, combining with cooldown reduction to cut her basic ability cooldowns by up to 67%. Understandably, we're adjusting the rest of Sona's kit to ensure she doesn’t go off the rails. Overall, Sona’s left with clearer purpose: transform fights into endless streams of song (and utility) as she scales into late-game.

"Sometimes when the skins team takes on large projects, they take a 'snapshot' of the champion's files to work on, including certain hard-coded values like base stats and movement speeds. Unfortunately, when the team finally finishes and implements the skin, those old values can be reintroduced to the game, overwriting any recent balance changes made. There have been a few cases of this happening in the past (Kayle's attack speed per level when we released Riot Kayle, Galio's Q when we released Gatekeeper Galio, etc), but rarely with so many 'reverts' to the champion. Unfortunately, Sona went through a small update during the time we were working on her skin, so she's gone back to all of her old base stats pre-champion update. While we considered shipping 5.3 with Sona disabled, we don't think the full extent of these changes merits taking her away from so many, so we're just fully communicating what's happened while we work on a bugfix as soon as possible. Summary: With new gold flowing into Sona's support coffers, it turns out Crescendo and Hymn of Valor would rock just a little too hard. We've reduced the ability power ratio on both, as well as adjusting the base heal amount of Aria of Perseverance at later ranks. She can still hit the high notes with her Power Chords, though, and we've added an AP ratio that'll allow Sona to scale better into the late game. Finally, the base activated speed boost of Song of Celerity has been slightly reduced, as it now scales its speed bonus with ability power.

Context: Our core focus with Sona is to take some power from her abilities to shift into her Power Chord and her Song of Celerity, which allows Sona's utility to scale into the late game while also ensuring her choice of Power Chord remains relevant at all stages.

Sona is a consistently strong support, so after we fixed a long-standing bug with Power Chord: Diminuendo we felt she would be a dominant pick without additional balancing. On that note, we’ve reverted some of our older changes to Sona. These changes are designed to maintain her parity with other supports by lowering her early game burst and her late game durability while making her a little more forgiving in the early game.
