Biography[]
Chris "Doombang" Badawi initially attempted to enter esports by purchasing Curse Academy when the team went on sale after the 2015 NA LCS Spring Expansion Tournament. His offer was ultimately rejected, and the team became Gravity, but Badawi continued to work with Team Liquid before forming his own team. He founded Misfits in March 2015, with a roster including Alex Ich, Crumbzz, and Remilia.[1] The team later added RF Legendary and Intense to fill out their initial line-up and quickly became recognized as one of the top North American Challenger scene teams. In June, MonteCristo joined the team as a co-owner, and they rebranded as Renegades, additionally picking up a CS:GO roster.[2]
On June 24, 2015, Riot published a competitive ruling on Badawi, finding him guilty of having "solicited a player under contract with Team Liquid to join his team."[3] He was found to have reached out to Keith and Quas about joining Misfits earlier on in the year and suspended eligibility to own an LCS team through the end of the 2016 season. Multiple parties released statements on the ruling, including Renegades themselves and also management members of multiple LCS teams.
2016 Season[]
On May 8, 2016, Riot published a second competitive ruling regarding Badawi, Renegades, and Team Dragon Knights.[4] The ruling stated that "current Renegades owner Christopher Mykles had a deal in place with suspended former owner Chris Badawi that would grant Badawi a 50% stake in the team once his suspension had expired," a direct violation of Riot's previous ruling, which removed Badawi's right to any current or future ownership of the team while they were in the LCS, until his ban expired.[4] Additional concerns were brought up, including player welfare and an overly-close relationship with the NACS team TDK, and Badawi was ultimately "permanently banned from any association or affiliation with a team in a Riot-sanctioned league."[4] The use of the word "permanently" was specifically noted to differ from an "indefinite" ban in that Badawi's ruling would never be subject to review.
