Phoenix1 was a North American team. The year after leaving League of Legends, the organization rebranded as Sentinels.

History[edit]

2016 Season[edit]

Phoenix1 was announced on May 23, 2016, as the team inheriting the NA LCS Summer Season seed previously belonging to Team Impulse.[1] On May 26, their starting roster was announced and included zig, Brandini, Inori, Slooshi, Pirean, Mash, and Gate.[2]

Faced with visa problems for Inori, the team also added a substitute jungler Zentinel to their roster, who competed for them for the first three weeks of the LCS. In that time, Phoenix1 lost all of their series and won only two games total, cementing themselves in last place, behind Echo Fox. Their winless streak continued after Inori's return and through their first series of the fifth week, at which point they had a 3-18 game record and 0-9 series record. In the second series of that week, however, they picked up their first series win against Apex Gaming, with a comeback 2-1 victory after dropping the first game. After this first win, their record improved significantly, and in the second half of the season they went a combined 5-4 — not enough to keep them out of relegations, but enough to surpass both Echo Fox and NRG in the standings for a top seed in the promotion tournament, where they requalified for the LCS with an easy 3-0 win over Echo Fox.

2017 Season[edit]

On December 7, 2016, Phoenix1 announced a revamped roster: Korean star mid laner Ryu and AD carry Arrow joined, along with veteran support Adrian.[3]

The team began the Spring Split looking much improved but not quite top tier, going 4-4 over the first four weeks and fluctuating between 3rd and 4th place. After that week, Inori took a leave of absence from the team due to "personal issues" and was replaced by veteran Cloud9 jungler Meteos. This addition seemed to be just what Phoenix1 needed, as they went 3-1 over the next two weeks. Adrian also left the team after week 6, but this did not stop their momentum, as he was capably replaced with the acquisition of Team Dignitas substitute support Stunt. After his arrival, Phoenix1 went on a four series winning streak to reach 11-5 and come within one game of a possible playoff bye before losing their final two games, finishing 11-7 and in 3rd place. Arrow was also named both the NALCS first team ADC and the MVP of the split.

In the playoffs, the team elected to start Inori against 6th seed Dignitas, despite him having only played three games since week 4. While he made a few shaky plays in the jungle, Inori and Phoenix1 easily swept Dignitas 3-0. Moving on to face Cloud9 in the semifinals, Phoenix1 elected to start rookie support Shady, who had also appeared in only three late season games, in place of Stunt. After two opening losses, Stunt and Meteos were subbed back in, but failed to reverse the team's fortunes in game 3, sending them to the third-place match against underdog FlyQuest. Despite the semifinals losses, Shady got the start in this series as well, and Phoenix 1 proceeded to come back and take third after going down 2-1 in the series.

In the midseason, Phoenix1 transferred Stunt to Immortals and named Shady as their starting support, as well as reaffirming that Inori would start in the jungle. Expected to be a strong contender to make Worlds, Phoenix1 got off to a horrible start in the Summer Split, losing all of their first six games. Criticism was especially directed at the duo of Arrow and Shady, both of whom were under performing in lane. After subbing in Meteos for week 2 failed to yield any positive results, 18 year old jungler MikeYeung, who had only graduated from high school the previous week, was made the starter and Shady was replaced by veteran support Xpecial. These changes failed to yield a win in week 3, but the team slowly improved after that, picking up their first win in week 4. Phoenix1 seemed to turn a corner in week 5, going 2-0 in series including a win over the first place Immortals, with hype building around MikeYeung due to his youth and outstanding performances on aggressive jungle champions.

This hype continued to build in Rift Rivals, the first international tournament for Phoenix1, which they had a spot in due to their 3rd place finish in the Spring. Despite their relatively unimpressive domestic record, Phoenix1 went 4-2 in the group stage, only missing out on advancing to the finals due to TSM going 5-1. Unfortunately, this would be the high point of the summer season for them, as Phoenix1 only managed two more wins upon returning to domestic play and finished 10th, sending them into the promotion tournament. MikeYeung, however, was still rewarded with the Rookie of the Split award.

In promotions, Phoenix1 was matched up against Challenger Series champions Gold Coin United due to finishing lower than Team Liquid. Phoenix1 won the first two games, then dropped the next two before recovering in the fifth game to pull out a series win. A 3-2 loss to Team Liquid in the next series sent them into the loser's bracket, but they managed to quickly sweep EUnited in the final round and retain their LCS slot. Despite staying in the LCS, however, their participation in the promotion tournament meant they forfeited their Spring Split championship points, robbing them of a chance at Worlds.
