SK Gaming has been part of the esports community since 1997. The organization entered the League of Legends scene in September 2010.
History[]
Formation of SK Gaming[]
SK Gaming's foray into League of Legends began on September 16, 2010, when SK acquired team I WEAR A CAPE IRL consisting of Osaft22, SleazyWeazy, Severus, Reyk, Zylor, Pylat, and Awe kek.[1]
Season 1[]
With this lineup, SK Gaming was able to take second place at the 2010 World Cyber Games. In the group stage, SK Gaming entered a three way match, tied for first. Going 2-1 by defeating AnotherStory and Counter Logic Gaming Prime, while falling to ChinaHero. In the playoffs, SK Gaming was able to defeat ChinaHero in their rematch 2-0, advancing to the finals. There, SK Gaming would fall to Counter Logic Gaming 1-2, taking home second place.[2]
On December 8, 2010, SK Gaming expanded their roster by recruiting the members of Team Dimegio. With this pickup, SK acquired Araneae, nRated, Rashaasii, Wickd, ALth0r, and ocelote. [3]Araneae would leave SK Gaming on March 23 of the following year.[4]
Pre-Season 2[]
The SK lineup would undergo a few more changes in the coming months. One of the biggest roster changes in SK Gaming's history occurred on June of 2011, with ALth0r, Farfain, LimeLight, nRated, Severus, and SleazyWeazy leaving, and being replaced by Candy Panda, WetDreaM, and Nyph.[5]
With their new roster, SK Gaming participated in the 2011 IEM Season VI - Global Challenge Cologne. SK was unable to pass the group stage, going 1-2 after defeating Frag Executors, then falling to Counter Logic Gaming Prime and FnaticRC. SK finished in 5th/6th place along with Team ALTERNATE. [6]
Shortly after the event, WetDreaM was replaced by Snoopeh. [7]
On October 5, 2011, SK Gaming placed third in the IEM Season VI - Global Challenge Guangzhou. With a strong performance, SK Gaming won its group by going 2-1, defeating CrossGaming and Invictus Gaming and losing to eHome. In the semifinals, SK Gaming fell to Counter Logic Gaming Prime 1-2, but then defeated eHome 2-1 in the third place match to take third at the tournament.[8]
A few weeks later, SK Gaming qualified for the IEM Season VI - Global Challenge New York. In the group stage, SK Gaming placed first going 3-0, defeating Sypher, Curse Gaming, and v8 eSports. Continuing on their success, SK Gaming defeated Counter Logic Gaming Prime 2-0 in the semi-finals. However, SK fell in the grand finals 0-2 to FnaticRC.
Season 2[]
In the coming months, SK Gaming underwent several changes to their roster. On October 20, long time top laner Wickd left SK to form Absolute Legends with WetdreaM. SK picked up MoMa for a short stint to replace Wickd, but MoMa left shortly after signing. Near the end of 2011, Snoopeh departed SK Gaming to join the new Counter Logic Gaming EU and Absolute Legends merger team. To fill the void, SK signed former against All authority top laner Kev1n.[9]
Ten days after SK's roster changes, they earned fourth at the IEM Season VI - Global Challenge Kiev. SK Gaming placed second in the group stage, defeating Curse Gaming and White Lotus while falling to Team SoloMid. Despite this strong initial showing, SK was swept by the eventual winner Moscow Five in the semifinals 0-2, and then Dignitas 0-2 in the third place match.[10]
On February 12, 2012, Dedrayon joined SK Gaming as their jungler.[11] SK Gaming had a dominant performance in the group stages of IEM Season VI - World Championship, going 4-1 and taking second place, defeating Curse Gaming, Team SoloMid, Sypher, and eHome, while losing their only game to Moscow Five. However, their success did not transfer over to the playoffs, as SK fell to against All authority in the quarterfinals. SK Gaming took 5th-6th place alongside Team Curse.
Longtime mid laner ocelote temporarily switched roles with top laner kev1n on May 20, 2012.[12] On June 8, ocelote returned to the mid lane, while kev1n became the AD Carry and Candy Panda moved to top lane. A month after these position changes, longtime SK member CandyPanda left the team along with jungler Dedrayon. To replace CandyPanda, SK brought on former Absolute Legends top lane player YoungBuck. Eleven days later, SK Gaming underwent yet another roster change, with Svenskeren and YoungBuck leaving and Kev1n moving back to the top lane.[13]
On July 29, SK received third place at European Challenger Circuit: Poland with Araneae jungling and YellOwStaR playing the AD carry role. SK dropped its first set to CLG EU, 1-2, but was able to overcome Team Curse Europe 2-1. Two days later, ocelote announced that this roster would be permanent.
Shortly before the start of the Season Two European Regionals in Cologne, SK Gaming picked up AD carry YellOwStaR and jungler Araneae. After only two weeks of training, SK Gaming competed at the regionals on August 16, 2012. In their first round, SK Gaming overcame the Polish Team Acer.PL 2-0 to advance. In a huge upset, SK swept the heavily favored Counter Logic Gaming EU 2-0 to qualify for the Season 2 World Championship and advance to the grand finals of the tournament. In the finals, SK Gaming fell to the Russian Moscow Five 0-2 and took home second place. After strong performances by YellOwStaR and Araneae, SK Gaming recruited them to officially join the main roster.
On August 25, during Campus Gaming Party: Berlin, Metalx of Western Wolves and Schabs of Team Acer substituted for YellOwstaR and Araneae, who were unable to attend due to personal reasons. SK took third place in group B with defeats by Eclypsia.Luna and Fnatic.
In early October, SK Gaming traveled to Los Angeles to play in the Season 2 World Championship. SK met an early exit, losing to CLG Prime, Azubu Frost, and Invictus Gaming in quick succession in the group stage. They left with an 11th-12th place result and $25,000.
On November 11, SK Gaming participated in Tales of the Lane. After placing 3-1 in their group with victories over Tt Dragons, mousesports and Team ALTERNATE and a sole loss to Fnatic, SK received a bye into the semifinals of the bracket stage. They lost their semifinal match to Eclypsia 0-2, and lost the ensuing third place match to Moscow Five 0-2, placing them fourth in the seven overall, going home with € 2,500.
Pre-Season 3[]
The team traveled to Poland to compete at IEM Season VII - Global Challenge Katowice in January, but were knocked out in the group stage, going 1-2 and coming in 6th, winning against Absolute Legends but losing sets to Azubu Frost and Fnatic. During their match against Fnatic, Fnatic mid laner xPeke broke open an extremely close game by backdooring the SK nexus. This play was received with widespread amazement and prompted the term "xPeke'd".[14]
Season 3[]
By finishing in the top three at the Season 2 EU regionals, SK had qualified to participate in Riot's new professional league, Season 3 EU League Championship Series, playing in a 10 week competition with the continent's best teams. During the spring season of 2013, the SK team played consistently well, finishing with a respectable 17-11 and claiming third place going into playoffs. The Season 3 LCS Spring Playoffs occurred in April, where SK was able to automatically secure their spot in the next LCS season in the first round when their opponent, sixth-seeded against All authority, was disqualified due to roster issues.[15] The team then faced Gambit Gaming, falling 2-0 to the Russians. In the third place match, SK faced Evil Geniuses and, despite having early leads in both games, were unable to close them out and lost 2-0, to finish fourth in the playoffs.
SK Gaming attended the IEM Season VII - World Championship in Hanover in March 2013. They were unable to make it to the bracket stage, placing 10th after winning only a single game against MeetYourMakers.
In the summer split of the European LCS, SK made consistently poor showings and held eighth place for most of the split, despite going 3-1 against the eventual champions Fnatic. After a brief resurgence in the last two weeks of the season, SK finished seventh and would face relegation in the 2014 Season Spring Promotion Tournament.
Kev1n and hyrqBot departed SK in September to join Ninjas in Pyjamas. In November, SK Gaming recruited LCS veterans fredy122 (previously of against All authority), Svenskeren (previously of Ninjas in Pyjamas), and challenger player Jesiz. After nearly three years as a starter, ocelote stepped down from mid lane to be a substitute, while Nyph took his spot as Team Captain.
In December 2013, SK Gaming faced SUPA HOT CREW XD in the Spring Promotion Tournament. After falling behind 0-2, SK Gaming won three games in a row to defeat SUPA HOT CREW XD and return to the LCS.
In the end of December 2013 Team Captain Nyph announced that he would be leaving SK Gaming to join Alliance.
2014 Season[]
After picking up new support nRated, SK Gaming competed in the Spring Split. After a few shaky weeks, is was clear that the changes to the roster had served the team well. As CandyPanda picked up the weekly MVP award for week three, SK's ascent of the rankings table began. By the penultimate week, SK had made it to 3rd place behind Alliance and Fnatic, but a perfect superweek saw SK claim 1st place. SK's performance in the spring split secured them a place in the Spring Playoffs. The playoffs saw the team beat Team ROCCAT in the semifinal, but following this, SK lost to Fnatic in the final, resulting in a 2nd place finish for the team.
SK started the Summer Split strong, Svenskeren picked up the weekly MVP award for week three, and SK stayed within the top 3 teams until the 9th week. Poor results toward the end of the split saw SK in 5th place after the penultimate week, but a late surge resulted in the team finishing in 4th place overall, with nRated picking up the weekly MVP award for the final week. Following this was the Summer Playoffs, a chance for the team to qualify for the World Championship. SK finished 3rd in the playoffs, losing to Alliance in the semifinal, but beating Team ROCCAT in the third-place match, securing themselves a place at the World Championship.
The World Championship saw SK placed in Group B along with Star Horn Royal Club, Team SoloMid and Taipei Assassins. SK only managed 2 wins in the group, but notably beat TSM in their last match of the group stage. SK finished in 3rd place in their group, meaning that they would not go any further in the tournament.
2015 Season[]
On November 24, 2014 SK Gaming announced that their lineup for the 2015 Season would consist of fredy122, Svenskeren, Fox, FORG1VEN, and nRated, with Fox and FORG1VEN newly joining the lineup.[16]
The Spring Split was a huge success for SK Gaming, finishing 1st in the regular season and losing only 3 games in the process.
Due to SK being in 1st place in the Spring Split at the specified cutoff date, the team were invited to compete at the IEM Season IX - World Championship. After a Round 1 win against the yoe Flash Wolves, SK Gaming lost to GE Tigers in Round 2 of the winners bracket, putting them into Round 2 of the losers bracket. SK Gaming were then knocked out by yoe Flash Wolves after losing to the Taiwanese team in their 2nd meeting at the tournament.
The team's regular season performance meant that SK Gaming would have a bye to the semifinals of the Spring Playoffs, where they would fall to Unicorns Of Love in a tight series, and become the first regular season 1st place finishers to fall in the semifinals of playoffs in LCS history. They went on to lose the third-place match to H2k-Gaming, securing themselves 30 Championship Points for the split.
After FORG1VEN's departure and CandyPanda's arrival, the Summer Season was far less successful for the team, ultimately finishing the regular season in 9th place. This meant that they would have to fight for their LCS status in the 2016 Spring Promotion, where they faced Gamers2. Now with NoXiAK in the place of nRated, a well-fought series eventually saw SK Gaming, who had been a part of the European LCS since it's conception, lose their place in the LCS.
2019 Season[]
In 2018, the organization was rumored to be rejoining the EU LCS as part of the 2019 European franchise program.[17] On November 20, Riot Games confirmed SK Gaming as one of the ten partner teams for the LEC 2019 Spring Split.[18]
They signed their core from MADL's roster consisting of Werlyb, Selfmade, and Crownshot and signed with Pirean from SKT and Dreams 2 koreans who had played in western regions before. After beating their old rivals Fnatic in week 1 they showed inconsistent performances throughout the split and finished in 6th place after winning a tiebreaker against Schalke 04. In Round 1 of playoffs they started good against Splyce but lost the series in the end convincingly 1-3.
Before Summer Split SK announced that they decided to switch the top laners of their main and academy team. This change did not seem to have a big impact on their performance at first as they started off with three 1-1 weeks before Rift Rivals. After the break they got really exposed though so they benched underperforming mid laner Pirean and instead gave academy player and rookie Jenax a chance to show himself. Jenax used this chance well but despite making a late run up the standings this time SK did not manage to withstand the pressure of a tiebreaker against Vitality and ended split and season in 7th place.
